Opening a café or restaurant in Istanbul means entering one of the city's most competitive businesses. In Kadıköy Moda, the Beşiktaş market area or on a single street in Beylikdüzü, two or three new venues can open in the same week. Hanging balloons on the door and putting up a "congratulations" sign on opening day is no longer enough; people see a venue on their phone first, then visit. In this article, we walk step by step through a launch content plan we've seen work in the field for café and restaurant openings in Istanbul, starting three weeks before opening and running until after the launch.
3 weeks before opening: set up your accounts and Google profile
The most common mistake we see is opening the Instagram account on opening day. Nobody follows an empty account, and content shared on opening day reaches no one. Create your Instagram and Google Business Profile at least three weeks before opening. Make sure the address, opening hours and category are correct on your Google profile; "coffee shop near me" searches are very high in Istanbul, and a verified profile brings in visits from the very first week. For details, see our local SEO and Google Business Profile guide.
The content to share in this period is "curiosity" content: the venue under renovation, the plates you've chosen, the coffee machine arriving, menu tastings. It doesn't have to be professional, but it does have to be regular. Starting with 3 stories and 2 posts a week is enough.
2 weeks before opening: a professional shoot day
Once the venue is finished and the tables and lighting are in place, schedule a shoot day. We plan the shoot day at least 5–7 days in advance; menu photos, a venue video and 4–6 Reels come out of a single day. This content feeds both the opening week and the month after. For shooting in Istanbul, choosing the right daylight matters: afternoon light gives the best results in west-facing venues on the European Side and venues with Bosphorus views on the Asian Side, but midday traffic lengthens the crew's travel time. Having the crew arrive early in the morning and work while the venue is empty is usually the most efficient plan.
Must-haves for the shoot: a close-up of the signature product, the venue's entrance and seating area, prep moments (coffee being poured, a plate going out) and the face of at least one team member. Content with faces builds trust in an anonymous city like Istanbul.
Opening week: soft opening and invite-only content
Hold a "soft opening" 3–4 days before the official launch: invite friends and family, neighbouring shopkeepers and a few small local content creators. The goal is both to test your kitchen flow and to have 20–30 pieces of user content by opening day. Reshare the stories your guests post on your own account; always keep the venue tag and location visible.
Opening-day content should be live: a morning prep story, the first customer, the busy moment, an evening thank-you post. Shooting this day with a professional crew also provides valuable brand film material for the months ahead.
Meta ads: 3-kilometer targeting
Don't set the ad radius wide during opening week. For a café, a radius of roughly 2–3 kilometers around the venue is usually enough, and 5 kilometers for a restaurant. Expecting customers from Avcılar to come to a café in Şişli isn't realistic; in Istanbul, bridge traffic and the divide between the two sides keep people's café choices largely within their own neighborhood. Put an opening-only offer in the ad visual: a clear, measurable campaign like "second coffee on us during the first week" always works better than a "we're open" message. 4 weeks after opening: building the habit
The opening buzz fades in two weeks; the real work starts after that. Your content calendar for the first month could look like this: 1. Monday. A Reel of the weekly menu or a new product. 2. Wednesday. A story series about the team or behind the kitchen. 3. Friday. A weekend invitation, a venue video with a location tag. 4. Sunday. Resharing customer photos and asking for Google reviews. To collect Google reviews systematically, you can use our guide to getting more reviews; in Istanbul, the number and regularity of reviews weigh heavily in map rankings.
Istanbul-specific nuances
Match your posting times to the rhythm of the neighbourhood. In nightlife districts like Kadıköy and Beşiktaş, posts between 19.00 and 22.00 get better engagement, while in residential areas like Bahçeşehir and Başakşehir, weekend morning breakfast content stands out. In office districts (Maslak, around the Ataşehir financial centre), lunch menu content should go out around 11.30 on weekdays. There's no single formula; you need to review the first month's data and adjust the calendar.
The clearest lesson we've seen with brands we work with, such as WestMix Cafe and Creme & Salt: however good the menu, venues that don't produce regular, face-forward content in the first month can't get noticed in Istanbul.
