Almost every business owner starting SEO asks the same first question: "When will we see results?" Giving an exact date wouldn't be honest, but saying "nobody knows" isn't helpful either. In this article we answer the question of how long SEO takes to work with the general trends we see in the field and a realistic month-by-month timeline. We also clarify the factors that lengthen and shorten the timeline so you can set the right expectations.
Why Is There No Fixed Timeline?
Because in SEO, results come from where your efforts intersect with your competitors'. A new site follows a different journey from one that has been live for ten years. Making progress on a local keyword like "Esenyurt kurumsal web tasarım" is far faster than on a nationally competitive one like "web tasarım". So any agency that promises you a fixed timeline without seeing your site is relying on a sales pitch, not a realistic analysis.
Google's Own Words
Google's official resources state that you should generally expect to wait between four months and a year to see the impact of SEO work. This wide range matches what we see in the field: the first signals arrive within a few months, while results that change the business model usually settle in after the sixth month.
A Realistic Month-by-Month Timeline
Month 1: Audit and foundation. A technical audit is carried out, Search Console and analytics are set up, keyword research is completed, and broken links and speed issues are fixed. Don't expect ranking changes; this is the month for laying foundations.
Months 2–3: First movements. Service pages are rewritten, the first blog posts are published and the Google Business Profile is tidied up. Rising impressions in Search Console and rankings between 20 and 50 for some long-tail keywords are the normal signs of this period. Traffic is still modest.
Months 4–6: Visible progress. Consistent content and internal links take effect; first-page visibility starts on low-competition local keywords. Organic traffic grows measurably compared with the start. This is when the answer to "Is SEO working?" becomes clear.
Months 6–12: Staying power. Authority signals (backlinks, reviews, brand searches) build up, and rankings are won on more competitive keywords too. The organic channel takes a steady share of form and phone leads. From this point, the work shifts into "growth" mode.
Factors That Extend the Timeline
1. A new domain: it takes time for Google to build trust. 2. Technical debt: a slow site, one that isn't mobile-friendly or one that bots can't crawl delays everything. 3. Irregular content: five articles one month and none for the next three kills momentum. 4. Past penalties or a history of spam links. 5. Focusing on national, highly competitive keywords.
Factors That Shorten the Timeline
1. An aged, clean domain. 2. Starting with local and long-tail keywords. 3. A steady publishing discipline: 2–4 quality pieces a month are more effective than 15 mediocre ones. 4. Existing Google reviews and a strong business profile. 5. Prioritising keywords with an "average position 8–20" in Search Console; these are the quickest to move to the first page.
What Should You Measure in This Process?
In the first months, look not at rankings but at impressions and the number of indexed pages. Then at clicks and the trend in organic traffic. And finally at conversions, which are what really matter: form submissions, calls and WhatsApp messages. If a monthly report only says "how many keywords we rank first for", know that the report is incomplete. For the quality of your agency's reporting, see our agency selection guide.
What to Do While You Wait?
There's no need to cut off the flow of leads while waiting for SEO to settle in. Google Ads and Meta ads bring in leads from day one; as SEO gets stronger, you can gradually lower the ad budget. In the field, we see this two-pronged setup as the healthiest model. What's more, carrying the converting keywords you learn from ad data into your SEO content plan lets the two channels feed each other; that's why we recommend reading your ad and SEO reports side by side in the first months. To do this, it helps to first understand the basic logic of SEO and how it differs from advertising.
