Working with businesses from different industries for years, we have noticed that the mistakes made in digital marketing don't vary much by industry; the same 15 mistakes repeat themselves at restaurants, furniture manufacturers and e-commerce brands alike. The good news: almost all of these mistakes can be fixed once they are spotted, and once fixed, results usually come quickly. In this article we list the most common digital marketing mistakes, each with the solution we apply in the field. You can read the list as a checklist for your own business.
Strategy and goal mistakes
1. Starting without a goal. "Let's be on social media" is not a goal. The fix: set one measurable main goal (X messages, X bookings, X sales per month) and make every decision based on it.
2. Defining the target audience as "everyone". Content that speaks to everyone reaches no one. The fix: describe your most profitable customer type in one paragraph and base your content and ad targeting on it.
3. Copying the competition. Not everything a competitor does works; often they're copying someone else too. The fix: watch competitors to differentiate, not to imitate.
Content mistakes
4. Posting only sales content. When every post is "discount, product, order", followers leave. Solution: make most of your content valuable types such as information, behind the scenes and customer stories; sprinkle sales content in between.
5. Low-quality visuals. Blurry, mismatched visuals shot in bad light drag down brand perception. The fix: schedule regular professional shoots; even when shooting on a phone, set rules for light, framing and consistency. We covered the photo-or-video question in this article.
6. Irregular posting. Five posts one week, then three weeks of silence. The fix: a content calendar. Produce and schedule a month of material on one shoot day a month.
7. Inconsistent brand language. A different font and colour in every design, a different tone in every caption. The fix: a short brand guide with the rules for logo, colour, typeface and tone of voice on a single page. For details, see our article on brand identity.
Advertising mistakes
8. Advertising with the "Boost post" button. It looks convenient, but targeting, placement and objective options are limited; the budget mostly goes to likes. Solution: set up ads in Ads Manager with the right campaign objective (messages, traffic, sales).
9. Advertising without measurement. Without the Pixel and Conversions API installed, you can't tell which ad brings in sales. Solution: set up measurement before you start advertising; for a setup guide, read this post.
10. Spending a big budget without testing. One creative, one audience, a big budget; when it fails, "ads don't work". The fix: test several creatives and audiences on a small budget, then scale the winner.
11. Sending ads to a bad landing page. A page that is slow, broken on mobile or whose message doesn't match the ad throws the ad budget away. Solution: check page speed and mobile experience before advertising; use a campaign-specific landing page.
Web and SEO mistakes
12. Building a website and forgetting it. Sites that aren't updated, don't get security patches and have outdated contact details lose value in the eyes of both customers and Google. The fix: a monthly maintenance routine and a yearly content review.
13. Expecting quick results from SEO, or not doing it at all. SEO delivers results over months, and none at all if dropped after two weeks. Solution: plan SEO as a long-term investment; cover the short term with ads while building lasting traffic with SEO.
Measurement and management mistakes
14. Looking at the wrong metrics. Likes and follower counts don't show the money coming in. Solution: put outcome metrics like messages, calls, forms and sales at the center of the report; our guide to reading reports is here.
15. Impatience and constantly changing strategy. A new method, a new agency, a new tone every month. No approach lives long enough to deliver results. Solution: give a strategy at least three months, evaluate the results with data, then decide.
Bonus: account ownership
The mistake that doesn't fit the list but costs the most: leaving your Meta Business Portfolio, domain, hosting and Google accounts under an employee or a former agency. When you part ways, years of accumulated work disappear. The fix: open every account under an email the business owns, and give agencies access only.
Where to start?
Trying to fix fifteen mistakes at once is the sixteenth mistake. First set up measurement (9), then clarify your goal (1), then establish a content routine (6), and finally fix the advertising side (8, 10, 11). This order makes every lira you spend visible and shows you whether your next steps are right.
At FG Production, the first thing we do with every new brand we start working with is go through this list together; often, just fixing the basic mistakes in the first month visibly changes the results.
